In his text ‘Madre[primer archivo]’ in the book ‘Archivo para no desaparecer,’ playwright Alberto Conejero writes: “Let us ask for the archive what María Zambrano asks for poetry: that it celebrates no conquest. An archive whose order is that of love. An archive ‘of companionable and strange things, the things we emerge from our first dreams.’ An archive that never completely detaches itself from flesh and dreams. An archive that does not subtract presence, but rather returns it. An archive that also gives form to that which it has not attained or has lost: to the ghost, to the shadow, to the reverie, to delirium itself. An archive also of absences. […]”

STRATA - the stories that bodies hold is an archive understood as an accumulation of layers of narratives.

In 2019, the artist Irene Pe created the work The Leftovers of the Aftermath. This was the final work of the Seeds for Resistance project, a collection of works and actions presented in an exhibition. The project explored the world through conversations the artist had with her daughter up to that point. The aforementioned work emerged at the last minute with the intention of combining, on the one hand, the use of leftover and discarded materials from the other works in the project and, on the other, creating a self-portrait of the artist's body at that moment after conceiving, giving birth, and raising a child. This soft sculpture was a gesture of assent to herself, like a marginal note, a reminder not to forget a question she had been asking herself for some time: what happens to a mother's body after conceiving, giving birth, and raising a child? The shortest and most direct answer would emerge over the next four years: 'in this story, the mother's body becomes ill.'

But illness is not just illness. Living in a sick body has many layers and multifaceted narratives. STRATA – the stories that bodies hold is a multidisciplinary and multifaceted exploration that begins in the first person and runs through the collective, the historical, the human, and everything more-than-human, bodies of flesh and blood, of earth, of air, and of water. Bodies that, in their multiple layers and strata, hold stories that are both cause and effect of one another. Bodies as archives.

All the works of this project were created while the artist suffered various degrees of chronic pain and other symptoms, thus the diverse use of materials an techniques that allowed her to work in while being in different states and having different capabilities. Irene Pe also reflects on the final look of these works: "Since I began creating works about illness, while suffering from chronic pain myself, what is understood as "grotesque," "ugly," and "imprecise" has become an integral part of my work. It is a 'crip aesthetic' that stems from the experience and reality of creating with a body, especially the hands, in constant pain. In turn, these works offer an alternative perspective on what is intrinsically beautiful and on the ableist tendency to associate the harshness of disability and illness with ugliness in all its forms and derivatives.
