"Bread" (2007) - Artist Statement
A collaborative project between Anni Holm and Irene Pérez

This project is based on the idea of giving new use to materials that would otherwise have been wasted in this case our subject was bread from a local bakery. Over a period of time we obtained bread by the loaf and conducted several experiments utilizing it as our main building material. Our goal was to create a sculpture that would be visually intriguing, be useful and at the same time inspire to change old and less eco friendly habits.

Together we developed an object that to some extend formally can resemble and at the same time function as a bird feeder. Using only sliced bread, string, rope and a few pieces of wood we were able to create a structure that was easily suspended from a tree in our backyard.

Although, the bread initially was looked upon as waste, as it had been sitting in a store unsold all day, it turned into an interesting and quite beautiful sculpture. This sculpture did not only add charm to our backyard, but also fed a large number of different birds over a good week during the ever-changing spring climate.

Leaving only the rope and wood behind, which is reuse-able for another project, we hope that our piece encourages you to think about the little winged creatures. You can easily equip your own backyard or balcony with an interesting sculpture using you old and dry bread scraps, not only will you save yourself a trip to the store, but you also limit the number of plastic birdseed bags in the landfills – a piece of string is really all you need, it can be that simple.
